Back to school also means getting back to extracurricular activities, trips to the park, outings and sports training. And with all of that come mud stains on trousers, T-shirts, sweatshirts, trainers and sports kits.

Mud stains can seem difficult to remove, especially when they dry and become embedded in the fibres. However, knowing when to act and which products to use can make them much easier to remove.

In this article, we explain how to remove mud stains from clothes and the most common mistakes you should avoid.

What to Do When Clothes Get Muddy

Although it may seem like the first thing you should do is wet the stain, this is not always the best option.

If the mud is still wet, handling it too much can cause it to spread over a larger area.

That is why the first steps are:

  • Carefully remove the excess mud.
  • If possible, allow the stain to dry.
  • Once dry, remove the remaining mud with a soft brush.
  • Check the garment’s care label before using any product.
  • Treat the stain before putting the clothes in the dryer.

An important tip: avoid rubbing wet mud too hard. You may end up doing the opposite of what you want and cause the dirt to penetrate even further into the fabric.

How to Remove a Mud Stain Step by Step

1. Let the Mud Dry

If the garment has just become stained and the mud is still wet, allow it to dry whenever possible.

It may seem counterintuitive, but once the mud is dry, it is easier to remove the solid dirt.

2. Remove the Dry Mud

Once the mud is completely dry, shake the garment or use a soft brush to remove as much as possible.

There is no need to scrub too hard. The aim is to remove the surface dirt before starting to treat the stain.

3. Rinse the Area

Once you have removed the excess mud, rinse the area with water.

You can do this from the back of the fabric to help push the dirt out rather than further into the fibres.

4. Apply Liquid Detergent

Apply a small amount of liquid detergent directly to the stain.

Leave it to work for a few minutes and gently work the area with your fingers or with a brush suitable for clothing.

5. Wash the Garment

Put the garment in the washing machine according to the instructions on the care label.

Use the recommended programme and temperature for that type of fabric.

Before using the dryer, check that the stain has disappeared.

If a mark is still visible, it is better to repeat the treatment before applying heat.

How to Remove Mud Stains from White Clothes

White clothes can be particularly challenging because any remaining mud is much more noticeable.

The first step should always be to remove the surface dirt and treat the stain with detergent.

If you need to use a specific stain remover, make sure it is suitable for white clothes and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not use bleach directly without first checking that the garment and fabric can safely tolerate it.

Incorrect use can damage the fibres or cause changes to the fabric.

What About Coloured Clothes?

With coloured garments, you need to be careful not to remove the mud stain at the expense of altering the colour of the clothing.

Before using a stain remover:

  • Check that it is suitable for coloured clothes.
  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If you are unsure, test the product first on a small, hidden area.
  • Avoid overly harsh products.
  • Always follow the instructions on the garment’s care label.

Mistakes to Avoid When Removing Mud from Clothes

❌ Rubbing Mud While It Is Still Wet

You may spread the dirt and cause it to penetrate deeper into the fibres.

Better option: let it dry and remove the solid dirt first.

❌ Putting Muddy Clothes Straight into the Washing Machine

The washing machine can remove a large amount of dirt, but the more mud there is on the garment, the more advisable it is to remove the excess first.

❌ Scrubbing Too Hard

This is especially important with sportswear, delicate fabrics or garments with prints.

❌ Using Products That Are Too Harsh

More product does not necessarily mean better results. Some stain removers can damage certain fabrics or alter their colours.

❌ Putting the Garment Straight into the Dryer

If a stain is still present after washing, avoid applying heat until you have treated it again.

What to Do If the Mud Stain Does Not Disappear

If a mark is still visible after washing, it does not necessarily mean that the garment is ruined.

First, avoid drying it with heat and treat the area again with a product suitable for the fabric.

Stains that have been on clothes for a long time or that have mixed with other substances, such as grass, grease or food, may require different treatments.

For delicate, sports or particularly important garments, it may be advisable to use a specialised service rather than trying numerous products yourself.
